Lawrence Price's Story

Patient's hip pain relieved
using new technology at Bronson

Lawrence Price, 66, had been living with lower back pain and leg pain for five years. In September of 2006, he was diagnosed with LSS, or lumbar spinal stenosis. LSS is when the spinal canal gets so narrow that it squeezes the nerves. This can sometimes cause leg, buttocks, groin and back pain. It typically affects patients 50 years or older.

The pain in Price's hips had gotten so bad that it was hard for him to walk. He went to see his family doctor in Jackson, Gail Burke, MD. She referred him to Raghu Singh, MD, a neurosurgeon at Bronson. Price was a great candidate for the X-STOP® IPD® system, a new technology that offers a minimally invasive alternative for LSS.

"Without this new procedure, my patients had to make the leap from conservative therapies, such as pain medications and physical therapy, straight to invasive surgery such as a laminectomy," states Dr. Singh.

The benefits of the X-STOP® IPD® procedure compared to traditional surgery are:

  • minimally invasive surgical procedure
  • the option of local anesthesia
  • the potential to be an outpatient procedure
  • no removal of bone or soft tissue
  • quick recovery time
  • removable implant that does not prevent a patient from undergoing surgery at a later time

Price had the X-STOP® IPD® procedure in January of 2007 and the pain stopped immediately. "The surgery changed my life. I don't know how else to say it - there is no more pain in my hips," says Price. "My only other option was a lot of drugs. The staff at Bronson and Dr. Singh have my blessings."
