Orthopedics

Bronson is a leader in joint replacement surgery, performing more knee and hip replacements than any other area hospital.

At Bronson, our surgeons perform orthopedic surgery in new ways, using less invasive technology that results in smaller incisions, less pain and faster healing times. And with a unit dedicated solely to orthopedics, our joint replacement patients benefit from specialized staff, all-private rooms, and a care and rehabilitation plan designed to meet their individual needs. That's one reason our joint replacement program is recognized as one of the top 5% in the nation, according to HealthGrades®, and why more people prefer Bronson for orthopedic surgery.

What does being among the best in the nation for orthopedic care mean to patients?
It confirms to patients and families that when they come to Bronson for orthopedic care they can expect outcomes that are among the best in the nation. Bronson provides care in virtually every specialty, and its level of care in orthopedics is particularly well respected. This stellar reputation is attributable, in large part, to the high quality of the orthopedic specialists who partner with Bronson. Quality
HealthGrades® is a national organization that uses Medicare data to rate how well hospitals perform specific procedures. In 2010, Bronson is ranked among the top 5% of hospitals in the nation for joint replacement surgery (four years in a row 2007-2010), is best rated in Kalamazoo for overall orthopedic surgery, and is best rated in southwest Michigan for spine surgery.

In addition, in 2010 Bronson earned five stars - the highest quality rating - for:

  • Overall orthopedic services (four years in a row, 2007-2010)
  • Total knee replacement surgery (four years in a row, 2007-2010)
  • Total hip replacement surgery (seven years in a row 2004-2010)
  • Back and neck surgery with spinal fusion (four years in a row, 2007-2010)

Every year, Bronson conducts a Community Perception Study to measure the community's perception of our services. Our 2009 study shows that in Kalamazoo County, Bronson is preferred 2 to 1 for orthopedic care.

Advances in Joint Replacement Surgery

  • Special, "laminar flow" operating rooms lower the risk for infection during orthopedic surgery.
  • Private rooms for recovery lower risk of infection.
  • Computer navigation - combine the precision and accuracy of computer technology with the surgeon's skill to perform surgery - giving you the best possible outcomes.
  • Improving systems and care reduces length of stay for joint replacement procedures and also leads to improved outcomes - typical stay is three days (two of these are post-op) unless the surgeon recommends otherwise.
  • Free pre-op class is offered to help you prepare for surgery and recover better after surgery.
  • Hospital rehabilitation is provided seven days a week reducing length of stay and shortening recovery times.
  • Outpatient rehabilitation is offered at four convenient locations providing you with continued care for faster recovery
  • Improved hardware and joint reconstruction techniques allow patients to return more quickly to their favorite activities and increases joint longevity.

If you suffer from these symptoms, you could be a candidate for joint replacement surgery:

  • Pain limits your everyday activities such as walking or bending.
  • Pain continues while resting, either day or night.
  • Stiffness in a joint limits your ability to move.
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs provide little pain relief.
  • Other treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or counseling don't relieve pain.

Pediatric Orthopedics
The Children's Hospital at Bronson, southwest Michigan's only children's hospital, offers complete orthopedic care for children, as well as for adults.
