Pharmacy Residency -- Rotation Description, Infectious Disease
Infectious Disease Infectious Diseases (ID) is an elective, four-week learning experience at Bronson Methodist Hospital. The patient will be assigned patients with interesting infectious diseases, which may or may not also be part of the Bronson ID team. The ID team may be a part of rounds depending on availability/patient load. Regardless the resident and preceptor will spend time reviewing and making recommendations to the patient’s antibiotic regimen. Discussion with the patient will occur depending on the need of information with the patient. Recommendations will be discussed with the decentralized pharmacist for the patient and then if warranted with the prescribing physician. The resident will often be working with students and will have some roles similar to those discussed in the internal medicine description. The resident will be focused on the infectious disease issues of the patient but will need to be familiar with all the disease states and how they are treated as interaction between the diseases and therapies almost always occurs. The resident will be responsible for the implementation of the plans discussed and take personal responsibility for the outcomes achieved. All interventions will be documented in a timely manner by the resident, decentralized pharmacist, and/or preceptor. Disease States: Common disease states in which the resident will be expected to gain proficiency through literature review, topic discussion, and/or direct patient care experience may include, but not limited to: - Staphylococcal bacteremia and endocarditis
- Wound infections
- AIDS and opportunistic infections
- CNS infections
- Viral Syndromes
- Febrile neutropenia
- Intraabdominal infections
- Osteomyelitis
- Absesses
- Fungal infections
